Address by the President/ Group Chief Executive Officer

01 Apr 2020

I hope all is well with you and your family.

The Prime Minister, YAB Tan Sri Muhyiddin bin Yassin addressed the nation on 25 March 2020 on the extension of the Movement Control Order (MCO) extending it to 14 April 2020. An effort to contain the outbreak of COVID-19 which have been declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a global pandemic.

Today at 5.00 pm, the Ministry of Health recorded 2,908 cases with 142 new cases, 645 patients cured and discharged and 45 deaths. The number of cases in Terengganu has risen to 48. Our frontliners are working tirelessly to manage and keep the situation under control. Globally, it is critical.

As responsible citizens, we must adhere to the decision and prescribe to all advice, recommendations and restrictions communicated by the authorities to protect the health, safety and well-being of us and the country.

It must have been challenging for the Prime Minister and the National Security Council to implement the MCO. While it is a needed action to curb the spread of COVID-19 and ‘flatten the curve’, it will have an impact on the economy. Many aspects needed to be weighed such as the survival of the country and its people.

The federal government as well as state governments are doing everything in their power to have support for both workers and businesses as well as the society. Each have tabled stimulus packages, financial aid, incentives and other initiatives in facing the strain of this unprecedented time.

The Economic Action Council (EAC) have also taken measures by implementing several initiatives to help ease the people’s burden. Employees Provident Fund (EPF) contributors can apply for i-Lestari withdrawal of RM500.00 from Account 2 for 12 months, supplementary funding of RM600 million to Ministry of Health in tackling the pandemic, deferment of National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) from 3 to 6 months and allocations to assist all state governments.

In addition to EAC’s efforts, the Prime Minister on 27 March 2020 unveiled ‘Pakej Prihatin Rakyat’ (PRIHATIN) a comprehensive stimulus package valued at RM250 billion that is rakyat-caring. Allocations have been put aside to protect the welfare and well-being of the people, to help all businesses including Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) and to strengthen the country’s economy. This include a one-off cash assistance which also include the M40 group. Payment will be made in April and remaining in May:

? Financial assistance of RM1,600.00 for household earning less than RM4,000.00 a month.
? Financial assistance of RM1,000.00 for household earning between RM4,001.00 to RM8,000.00 a month.
? Single individuals aged 21 and above, earning below RM2,000.00 a month, will receive RM800.00. As for single individuals aged 21 and below, earning between RM2,000.00 to RM4,000.00 a month, a one-off cash assistance of RM500.00.

Meanwhile, the remaining balance under Bantuan Sara Hidup Rakyat (BSHR) will be paid in July 2020. The telecommunication companies have come on board to provide free internet to all their customers throughout the MCO beginning 1 April 2020. A “tiered-discount” between 15% to 50%, according to electrcity usage, will be introduced by TNB to provide relief to all Malaysians for 6 months beginning April.

Our Chief Minister announced the 'Terengganu Cakna COVID-19' stimulus package on 21 March 2020 valued at RM640,000.00 for necessities to those in need. In response to this, a second, third (RM960,000.00) and fourth package (RM9.6 million) followed to help cushion financial issues and cope with this challenge.

I am working closely with the state government to see where we, Terengganu Inc Group, can assist where needed. I also encourage you to assist where you can in your own capacity. Terengganu Inc Group are experiencing a challenging time and may this pass us by and we come out of this stronger than when we went into it.

Meanwhile, we will continue providing the latest updates on COVID-19 via all channels of communication to circulate government initiatives and regulations during this order.

Let's together echo the same message our Prime Minister has chanted, 'Stay At Home'. I urge you to do so. We must grasp and understand the significance of this order. We all have a role to play. If done diligently, we can get life back to normal and our country back on its feet.

We also must not forget our heroes the Frontliners such medical workers and law enforcement, who exposed themselves to greater risk to protect us from harm. Let’s celebrate them by showing our appreciation for their strength and spirit. This is also a unique opportunity to spend precious time with your loved ones and strengthen the bond.

Though we are socially distant, we remain connected digitally. You may contact me and my team for any assistance. My thoughts are with you. As soon as things are allowed, we will see you again.

Stay safe. Stay healthy. Stay vigilant.
